This particular piece is nephrite jade, or Alaskan jade. Alaskan jade comes in many shades of green but the jade used for jewelry is usually a rich, dark green.
The world's finest jade is found in Alaska, British Columbia, and the Yukon and is revered for its healing and mystical powers.
Large deposits of Alaskan jade are found along the Seward Peninsula, particularly in Jade Creek and Jade Mountain in northwestern Alaska.
