Description
Tlingit art is an important part of Alaska’s cultural heritage. The Tlingit people are an indigenous group that has lived in the region for thousands of years and are known for their rich artistic traditions. Tlingit art is characterized by intricate designs and bold, vibrant colors, often featuring depictions of animals, mythical creatures, and human figures. Tlingit art can be seen in a variety of forms, including totem poles, masks, jewelry, and woven baskets. Many Tlingit artists continue to create and showcase their work in galleries and museums throughout Alaska and beyond. Tlingit art is not only visually stunning but also a symbol of the culture, history, and traditions of the Tlingit people.
This coin design is a collaboration between Gunnar, here at the mint, and Steffani Coxwell. Steffani is a Tsimshian Alaska Native artist that lives in Soldotna, AK on the Kenai Peninsula. It features a totemic grizzly bear or “xóots” in the Tlingit language in Southeast Alaska. Indigenous people were awestruck by the tremendous size and strength, that gave the grizzly great totemic power. It was rarely hunted and, when it was, the hunters treated it with the respect and seriousness reserved for warfare.
This medallion is minted in golden bronze, pure copper, 1 ounce .999 fine silver, 1 oz single gold relief (24k plating on part of the silver coin) and 1 oz double gold relief (24k gold plating on both sides). It is similar in size to a silver dollar and is packaged in an airtight container and handsome gift box. The reverse features our popular “Land of the Midnight Sun” design.
