About the Artist:
As a school librarian, I deal first-hand with the life and death of books. Libraries are a place for books to be used, read and loved. They are not an archive for old materials; that is a museum. Libraries try to keep their collection maintained with current materials and weed out the old. It can be heart-wrenching and emotionally charged to discard books.

Please understand that the books I use have been carefully reviewed before being discarded. They are books no longer circulating, damaged beyond repair or needing to be replaced because their content is outdated. Libraries can sell or give away discarded books, however in the end most will be sent to recycling or the landfill. The “Altered Book” art form allows me to give discarded books one last chance and is a natural direction for my creativity.
