About artist Rebecca Brewer

Rebecca Brewer is a lifelong Alaskan who lives on her homestead in Haines. She is an avid subsistence harvester, organic vegetable grower, and craftsperson.

Rebecca has been practicing the ancient art of tanning skins for over 20 years. Her salmon skins are tanned by hand with all natural materials in her home workshop with recipes she has tested. She works the skins with stone hand tools she has made.

Salmon leather is strong, durable, flexible, and lightweight. Metallic colors shine in the light just like salmon out of the water! Unique for its water resistant qualities, salmon skin was used in Alaska for rain gear, footwear, storage bags and more.

These salmon skin creations are made from the heart with hopes that salmon will return year after year to sustain us and the beautiful wild place we call home.
