Did you know that Alaska is home to a large whale population? During the summer months humpback whales make the several thousand mile journey from Hawaii and Mexico to feed in the abundantly rich Alaskan waters. About 600 humpback whales return to Alaska each summer to feed. They sure are a sight to see playing and splashing around in the water!
 
Before going on long dives, many whales exhibit a behavior known as sounding; they stay close to the surface for a series of short, shallow dives while building their oxygen reserves, and then, when they are ready, they make a sounding dive.
