Description

The world was dark inside where the humans lived. They kept themselves secret until one day a great bird would come to find them. The is one of the best stories of the Northwest Coast Native tradition.  One day, Raven learned that the chief held a great secret, the chief held the sun in a wooden box in the chief's clan house. Nobody was allowed to see the sun so the world was dark. One day, Raven saw the chief's daughter filling water by the stream so Raven, being the trickster that he was, turned himself into a pine needle and swam into the chief's daughters basket. When the chief's daughter drank from the stream she became pregnant and soon bore a child and Raven became the chief's grandson. The chief gave his grandson everything he wanted, except the box in the clan house that held the sun. But Raven kept trying. One day, the chief finally said, "ok, you can have the box." So Raven took the box from the highest shelf and opened it to find another box so Raven opened that box and kept opening boxes until he came to the last box.  Raven slowly took the lid off the last box and out popped the sun! Raven turned back into himself and carried the sun in his beak up through the chimney where he shared the sun with the rest of the world. And then there was light.
