The Bear Copper: the most important symbol of wealth, power, status and prestige is a shield-shaped object made of beaten copper, sometimes engraved with symbols. This design represents the bear crest within the shield.
Tlingit master artist/carver Israel Shotridge was born and raised in Ketchikan, Alaska, a member of the Bear (Teikweidee) Clan of the Tongass (Taantakwan) Tribe. His Tlingit Name is Kinstaddaal - the bear that is standing up. Shortridge creates commissioned works of art in his home studio on Vashon Island, WA.
For over 25 years Shortridge has been creating traditional and contemporary artworks for the public, private and corporate Native art collections worldwide including monumental totem poles, house screens, carved panels, canoes, ceremonial objects and engraved silver and gold jewelry. More recently, Shortridge has accomplished contemporary works in sandblasted glass, depicting his exquisite formline designs.
