Life Is A Quilt For Jan Nardone

Life Is A Quilt For Jan Nardone
Jan Nardone has a passion for quilting. But she’s not alone.

"Quilters all have a passion,” she says.

Nardone, who owns Changing Tides, a Juneau-based quilting shop, came to Alaska via a roundabout route that included time in New York, Philadelphia, Seattle and Atlanta. She also lived in Sitka and Skagway before settling in Juneau.

She’s lived in enough places to know where she prefers to be. "I loved New York and Philadelphia, but Alaska is 10 times better,” said Nardone, who moved her shop from Skagway to the second floor of the Senate Mall Building in Juneau in 2005.

Changing Tides, established in 1994, is a unique needle art and gift shop known for its selection of Alaskan quilting patterns, cross-stitch and needlepoint designs, and Nardone prides herself in the fact that her quilts and the ones she sells at Changing Tides are genuine Alaska.

Nardone has an art background, having majored in textile design at the Fashion Institute of New York. But she has always loved quilting, and she said other quilters have a passion for the art. Her cozy shop attracts visiting quilters from all over the world during cruise ship season.

"You can sometimes get anywhere from 45 to 150 quilters on a ship that come to your shop,” she said. "Those are amazing days. I love working with fabrics, and I get to meet the greatest people who are also quilters. They have a passion.”

Her own passion for quilting goes back to her days in New York when she was painting prints for quilts. Now, quilting "is one of the closest things to art I can do,” she said. "It’s in my background and with a degree in textile design, quilting was a natural progression when I moved to Alaska.”

She currently designs quilting patterns and fabric panels for Alaskan artists such as Barbara Lavelle, Jon Van Zyle and represents other Alaskan artists including Jean Campbell, Byron Birdsall, and Meredith Marks.

Attention all quilters: make sure to stop in and get your Changing Tide's row by row Alaska themed pattern!

In addition to its large selection of quilting patterns, cross-stitch and needlepoint designs, Changing Tides also boasts t-shirts, cookbooks and jewelry, among other things. It’s always a treat to stop by and say hi to Jan (and her adorable dog, Paxton) because you’ll never know what treasure you’ll find in her store.

"We have great customer service; we’re open year-round and we’re more than just a quilt shop.”
